죽음은 흔히 삶을 불러낸다.

다른 생의 단절 앞에서 내 생의 의미를 돌아보게 되기 때문이다. 어떤 죽음은 분노를 불러낸다. 사람의 잘못이 초래한 불행한 죽음들이 그렇다. 또 어떤 죽음은 분노의 노래를 불러내기도 한다. 2인조 밴드 ‘더 라스트 인터내셔널(TLI)’의 노래 ‘마스터(Master, 주인)’도 그렇게 나왔다.

미국에서 경찰관의 무릎에 눌려 사망한 조지 플로이드. 그의 죽음은 휴화산처럼 속으로 끓던 인종 문제를 다시 거리로 불러냈다. 60년 전 마틴 루서 킹이 행진하던 그 거리다. 쉽게 해결되지 않는 문제임은 누구나 알았다. 불공평과 치욕의 문제라는 것도 누구나 알았다. 하지만 여전히 생사의 문제라는 것은 많은 사람은 잊었다.

그러는 동안 흑인들은 꾸준히 죽었다.
플로이드 앞에도,
그리고 플로이드 뒤에도.

경찰에 의해 살해당한 무장하지 않은 흑인들을 기록한 명단이 있다. 스크롤을 한참 내려야 끝난다. 불행히도 리스트는 계속될 것이다. 바뀌는 것이 없기 때문이다.

그래서 사람들이 거리로 나온다. 바뀌지 않는 것을 바꾸려고 한다. 그리고 TLI는 노래를 만들고 부른다. 바뀌지 않는 것을 바꾸기 위해서다.

말하자면 조지 플로이드의 추모곡이다. 하지만 그 한 사람만을 위한 것은 아니다. 그보다는 선언에 가깝다. 이제 더 이상 참지 않겠다는. 이제 당신은 나의 주인이 아니라는.

노래 마지막 장면에 가슴이 서늘해진다. 노래가 절규고, 선언이고, 투쟁이라면 이렇게 될 것이다.

TLI는 뉴욕에서 시작된 2인조 밴드다. 이지 파이레스는 기타, 딜라일라 파즈는 보컬이다. 노동자, 미국 원주민, 정치, 저항이 이들이 만들고 부르는 노래 주제다. 우리식으로 말하자면 민중가요다. 이름부터 ‘인터내셔널(Internationale)’이다. 19세기 결성되었던 사회주의 국제기구 1, 2차 인터내셔널[footnote]International Workingmen’s Association; 국제노동자협회, 첫 단어만 따와서 흔히 ‘인터내셔널’이라고 부른다. 제1차 인터내셔널(1864-1876)은 맑스와 엥겔스가 이론적 기반을 제공했고, 1871년 파리 코뮌의 등장에 기여했다. 제2차 인터내셔널(1889-1916)은 프랑스혁명 100주년 기념해 1889년 창설, 마르크스 사후 엥겔스가 이론적인 뒷받침을 했으고,  제3차 인터내셔널(1919-1943)은 레닌이 발기하고, 스탈린이 결국 집권했으며, 해체시킨 코민테른(국제공산당)을 의미한다. 제4차 인터내셔널(1938-1963)는 스탈린의 코민테른에 대항한 트로츠키주의자가 결성했다. [/footnote]을 염두에 둔 것이리라.

창작물에는 저작권이 붙는다. 그래야 창작자도 먹고 산다. TLI는 위 노래 ‘마스터’로 돈 벌기는 포기했다. 돈보다 흑인 목숨이 더 중요하다고 생각했기 때문이다. 스스로 유튜브에 올린 노래 소개에는 공짜로 듣는 대신 노래값을 흑인 인권운동 단체에 기부하라고 호소한다.

그렇다고 구질구질한 가라지 밴드는 아니다. 미국 내외 락페에도 자주 등장하고 지금 유럽 투어도 열심히 다니고 있다.

한동헌은 김광석이 부른 ‘나의 노래’[footnote]한동헌 작사·작곡[/footnote]에서 “나의 노래는 나의 힘, 나의 노래는 나의 삶”이라고 선언한다. TLI의 생각과 같다. 그들의 노래는 그들의 힘이고 삶이다. 그들이 지키고 대변하려고 하는 민중들의 힘이고 삶이기도 할 것이다.

“우리 노래는 당신을 불러일으키고 분노케 하고 힘을 주고 일깨우고 당신도 모르는 채 가지고 있는 편견을 깨뜨려 버릴 수 있습니다.” (TLI)

선한 의도가 세상을 바꿀 수 있다고 믿던 시대가 있었다. 순진한 생각이었을지도 모른다. 악착같은 탐욕과 야만의 견고한 벽이 가로막았다. 그 앞에서 많은 사람은 좌절하고 믿음을 버렸다. 또 많은 사람은 거꾸로 바뀌어야 할 대상으로 퇴화했다.

그래도 그런 사람들은 여전히 있다. 선의의 달걀로 탐욕과 야만의 철벽을 쳐 무너뜨리러 나서는 사람들. 세상에 불의가 사라지지 않는데 누가 이들을 무모하다고 비웃을 것인가. 노래의 힘, 선의의 힘이 비록 작지만 잘 벼려진 칼날이 되기를.
